Postmillennial Pop Series
This series publishes work that reimagines scholarship on popular culture in the age of late capitalism, transnationalism, and globalization. How do media innovations and practices still in formation reanimate critical approaches to a capacious array of popular forms, including music, television, literature, gaming, comics, video, and movies, as well as emergent forms and platforms in popular discourse? Conversely, how does the analog (in form and concept) persist, resurface, and reinvent itself despite the fascination for “the new” or the “not yet”?
While the series focuses on contemporary popular cultures, the designation “postmillennial” is not meant to be a historical proscription. Instead, Postmillennial Pop encourages interdisciplinary media and cultural studies approaches that consider contemporary forms and popular practices within a broader matrix of political, cultural, and affective histories of race, class, sexuality, gender, and ability. Simultaneously, the series seeks to highlight the surprising, unexpected, and creative forms of cultural politics that emerge out of the shifting global flows of people, media forms, information, and beliefs. We are ultimately interested in better understanding the role that popular culture plays across time periods and geographical locations in expanding the political imagination of countless audiences.
